The Smartkey FX is the simplest and the least costly model; it uses a protection process based on the assignment of a unique and personal internal code: the Identification Code or Id-Code.§

The algorithm based protection (thus not providing fixed answers) utilizes encrypted operations relating to the internal code. The Id-Code is used as the main coding parameter; a block of data is sent and returned duly encrypted in a different form for each Id-Code.

The presence of the key can be detected by comparing the returned data with the expected data. If they coincide, the program runs normally, otherwise, the execution may be stopped.

Other products on the market just modify the header of the.EXE file without implementing the encryption, making it easy to "unprotect" the executable file.
